Excerpt from article in Edinburgh’s “The Scotsman”/”Evening News” on Monday April 5

Text by Hazel Mollison, Photo by Dan Phillips

Here comes the bride, getting into her stride…………

It seemed the perfect cure for wedding day nerves.

Anna and her groom Robin persuaded their friends and family to take part in the Bupa Great Edinburgh Run for charity just hours before the wedding.

The couple will have just two hours to get ready before they tie the knot at Edinburgh Castle later that day.

Anna, herself a commercial photographer, said it would be the perfect opportunity to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support after brother-in-law Matthew died of cancer last year.

She said: “I always thought it would be fun to be the ‘runaway’ bride and coincide our wedding day with the Edinburgh 10k.

“Because I have photographed at least 300 weddings, I have never got around to organising my own and wanted our wedding day to be about having fun with our friends in a very special place, rather than agonising about the perfect white dress.

“My young brother-in-law died of cancer last year, which is another reason why we decided it really was time to get married and has made me feel more grateful than ever that I am alive, living in the city I love, with the man that I love and that I CAN run.”

Anna admitted that some of her guests were a bit reluctant when she first suggested a bracing 6.2 mile jaunt.

She said: “Most people thought we were completely mad when I suggested it, but I can’t believe how many of them have decided to join in.

“Some have said it would be good motivation to get fit and one commented I should get married more often.”

Anna and Robin, who met 15 years ago, both studied mechanical engineering in Edinburgh and share a love of adventure and the outdoors.

The pair have completed several 10k runs and take part in the Edinburgh Rat Race every year.

Anna will be spurred on for the big day by her sister Kathy, a personal trainer who works with Chest, Heart and Stroke Scotland and who won her category in the same run several years ago.

The couple, who divide their time between Edinburgh and Norway, where Robin works as an engineer, have invited friends from across the globe, including Alaska and Singapore.

Robin said: “We do the race every year and have a bit of a party afterwards for our friends.

“This year we’ll have another reason to celebrate.

“I was surprised so many people decided to join us, but Anna can be very persuasive.”

From all over the UK, a group of sixteen had travelled to Ardanaiseig House Hotel, winner of “Scottish Romantic Hotel of the Year” to learn how to identify and cook edible fungi. Dick calls them “free groceries”.

In spite of blustery rainy weather (very unusual in Scotland), enthusiasm for finding fungi grew as the baskets filled with all manner of species.

This annual event takes place in Ludlow, and this is the third time Robin and I have made it down from Scotland to take part. This time Robin had come all the way from Stavanger, Norway!

Len leading the charge across the "roof of the world"

Danny Mason, on behalf of the Wolverhampton Wheelers Cycling Club, designs a 70+ mile route through some of Shropshire’s most dramatic (ie steep) landscapes.

Wolverhampton Wheelers

We started with a 1525 ft north face climb of the Long Mynd where unfortunately a few of the “secret” lanes really were a bit steep and I was one of the many cyclists who had no choice but to walk up!

When we were little my dad would bet us one of the new £1 coins that we would have to walk up steep hills to make sure we didn’t, but on this occasion I am not sure that any amount would have kept me on the saddle.

John

After lunch the afternoon provided a two part “hors categorie” climb to the 1508ft summit. (Unfortunately “hors categorie” would appear to mean in English “get off before you fall off” ). As Danny promised, this ride across the top of the world was well worth the pain, and I enjoyed the views and the red kite soaring above us.

With only ten miles to go my old bike developed even more rattles, which proved to be a puncture. A job which would have taken me hours was done in five minutes by my very competent team, while I stayed well out of the way taking photographs.

Unfortunately due to the untimely stop for repairs we were beaten by a small boy who didn’t look more than 1o or 11, but well done to him anyway!!

The event is definitely not a race, it’s for the joy of being on the bike on fantastic roads in glorious Shropshire. And it does rain outside Scotland!!!

(These photographs were taken on a mobile phone, and hence are not up to normal professional standards!!)

This job in Glasgow was particularly fun – the hardest part was turning down squads of aspiring female photographic assistants ………I felt a bit selfish. I hadn’t been able to resist bragging a bit (to girls) about the tempting brief I was sent: Photograph a rugby team creatively………..

The client was O2, and they were needing creative photographs from a variety of deserving community projects for sponsorship. No pressure obviously, but I so hoped my photographs would win Jordanhill Phoenix Rugby Football Club the cash.

I turned up for work two hours early as usual, and then watched time slip away as the players arrived in their own good time and wouldn’t be nagged into hurrying up a wee bit……. They were focused on winning their next match – and could only spare a few minutes for photography before they had to get down to business. Their loss, and mine!!

A blog to celebrate the puffins on the Isle of May, a Scottish Natural Heritage nature reserve, near Edinburgh. There are 200 000 seabirds on a wee island just 1.8km long and less than half a kilometre wide.

In spite of a hideous rain forecast I went out to the island on 1st May to find that puffins apparently like sitting on the cliffs in miserable weather – and go fishing when it’s sunny!
I had planned to leave the island 24 hours after I arrived, but a hideous wind forecast developed and the boat trip was cancelled. The only reason I minded being marooned was that I had bullied a lot of folk into running the Edinburgh 10K on the 3rd May, and would have felt really guilty if I had missed the torture………..

They are hopeless at flying, knocking birds off cliffs by carelessly landing on top of each other. The birds look round continually for predators such as the greater black backed gull, but seem oblivious to puffins dropping like stones from above.

It reminded me of my own lack of skill with a paraglider. On several occasions I narrowly missed impaling innocent bystanders on my skis, and tangling them up in a bag of silk.
